On September 19th, the third and last part of Bautzen Memorial’s permanent exhibition »Haft unterm Hakenkreuz Bautzen I und Bautzen II 1933-1945« about the National Socialist penal system was inaugurated. gewerkdesign has been involved in the different stages of Bautzen Memorial’s remodelling since 1997, having created the design for the exhibition parts about Bautzen as a Stasi prison and as a special detention camp during the Soviet occupation. The parts are chronologically arranged on the three stories of the building. While the architecture of the building was mostly left in its original state, a few of the rooms were rearranged: Their contemplative exhibition design provides an opportunity for the visitors to concentrate on the exhibitions and on the information given. Creative highlight: the rooms are furnished with a free transformable, modular system of wooden shelves – elegantly honouring the complex history of the memorial site. The shelf compartments’ proportions are similar to the former prison cells, thus referring to the site itself and its architecture. In order to physically and semantically guide the visitors through the multi-layered area, gewerkdesign created a signage system and, together with Lotsenhaus Media, a media guide.

Museum rework at Eutin Palace

Background

The museum of the Eutin Palace has by stages reworked its permanent exhibition as well as its graphic identity – created and accompanied by gewerkdesign.

First to be reopened were the redesigned Royal Loge, the Palace Chapel and the Antependium Room. The antependium, a precious altar hanging, is the sole focal point in the design concept of its room. The redesign of the antependium room is created around the exhibit itself. An intricate lighting concept guides the visitors’ gaze in the darkened and sparsely furnished room – with only the antependium to focus on.

The design of the new permanent exhibition including a modern signage system was inspired by the reflections and crystalline shapes of the luxurious chandeliers that are found throughout the palace. Taking this idea as a starting point, gewerkdesign developed a variety of design elements that guide the visitors from the inner courtyard to the newly staged first floor of the palace. In cooperation with the light designer Ulrike Link, indoor steles were created with colours matching the room they are positioned in. These textile polygons not only inform about the history of the rooms but also serve as lighting screens. Crystalline shapes – as the key element of the design – are also found in the new palace’s logo that was reworked by gewerkdesign.

An animated welcome film, produced together with the artist Larissa Blau, reflects the element of mirroring in its kaleidoscopic style. A digital media guide, developed with our project partners Graphscape and speak low, provides the visitors with additional material such as video, audio and text, while guiding them through the museum.

Georg Forster and the South Seas Collection

Background

The permanent exhibition in Schloss Wörlitz opening 2019, the »Georg Forster Year«, will present one of Germany’s most impressive ethnographic collections. It is centred on the natural scientist Georg Forster, who at the end of the 18th century accompanied James Cook on his voyage around the world. During this trip Forster gathered a unique collection of objects from the Pacific region. The first part of this exhibition, titled »Georg Forster – Explorer of the World in Wörlitz«, opened in May 2018. gewerkdesign’s exhibition design was inspired by historical Polynesian nautical charts. We found these nautical masterpieces and their fragile aesthetics very fascinating. The exhibition’s elements are built on these light, almost floral basic designs and are combined with a delicate shadow play.

New Bauhaus Chicago: Experimental Photography and Film

Background

To show the »New Bauhaus Chicago« school’s creativity and keenness to experiment was the exhibition design’s primary objective. The entrance to the exhibition makes reference to one of the institute’s most important tools: designed like a bellows camera, a darkened hallway calmly introduces the visitors to the »New Bauhaus Chicago’s « programme. The seclusion and the special lighting add to the concentrated atmosphere. Like a camera, the entrance gate leads to a large film projection. From there the visitors enter a wide open space – exuberant with lively motion. Here the protagonists and their films and photographic works are paramount. The architecture follows the design of the »New Bauhaus« and plays with its materials, colours, and motives. The exhibition design repeats the transparencies, reflections, and colourful plastics often used in its experimental films and photographs. One of these design elements is »blurriness«: resulting from a lack of technical possibilities at the time or the learning process itself, blurriness is a defining feature of many exhibits. The design quotes this blurriness and actively enhances it. The coarse grid in print graphics translates it into a coherent visual language. Combined with luminous typography and film projections floating in the room, the different elements merge into a diverse and translucent landscape. A colouring concept organizes the different impressions. The visitors can either relax in one of the chairs and contemplate on a detail or allow themselves to be engrossed by the buzzing blur of the ensemble.

Riots + New Beginnings. Bremen after 1968

Background

The new special exhibition »Riots + New Beginnings. Bremen after 1968« presents Bremen’s tumultuous history between 1968 and 1983. These years – encompassing for example the Tramway Riots and the closing of the AG Weser shipyards – saw the younger generation’s hopes and sense of impending change collide with the decline of the industrialised society. It was a time of major changes, protests and riots, but also of new beginnings, which effectively changed the city’s atmosphere. By their vivid, spontaneous design, gewerkdesign ties in with this »revolutionary spirit«: The stage gewerkdesign provides for the Focke-Museum’s diverse exhibits is rich and intense, resembling an installation rather than a typical exhibition. The Bremen Theatre played an important role in initiating the riots and therefore now inspired the exhibition’s design. Stage platforms, brochures, backdrops and moving images relate to the aesthetics of a theatre set. Multimedia elements reflect the participatory idea of the riots.

A Civil Museum for Wolfenbüttel

What’s the connection between Wolfenbüttel and Basketball?

Background

The former Jahn Gymnasium definitely is the perfect location for the new »Civil Museum« in Wolfenbüttel. The building, originally designed as an indoor riding school, has been connected to the people of Wolfenbüttel by the ever changing history of its usage for many years. O.M. Architects and gewerkdesign have now transformed it into a multifunctional event und exhibition venue. The design connects the city’s urban spaces and citizens. It is centered around a two storey steel stage, which gives structure to the exhibition hall and enhances its historical elements. A surrounding panoramic wall echoes the typical timber framing style of Wolfenbüttel and links the location to the exhibition’s narrative. The modular furniture and display system easily adapts to the requirements of an exhibition location. And more importantly, it supports the museum in its complex task to serve as the city’s memory. This adaptability is also a clue for the museum’s exhibition concept: The people of Wolfenbüttel can loan out items to the museum, thus telling their own story and actively shaping the exhibition themselves. This »living archive« is the backbone of the museum and features a most contemporary form of participation. Opening May 11th 2017.

Wald. Berlin. Klima. – An Exhibition in the Forest

Background

Initiated by the Berlin Forestry Department as a part of the IGA 2017, the exhibition »Wald. Berlin. Klima.« examines the forests’ adaptation to climate change and explains the work of the foresters. The topics are presented in 11 chapters along a round path of 4 km length through Grunewald Forest.

The two year cooperation between the Berlin Forestry Commission, the staff of the Senate Department, hoch C landscape architects and gewerkdesign intended to create an experience, that would present the exhibition’s topics in a contemporary and exciting manner, informatively and insightful, to a broad audience and in a natural setting. These goals resulted in a special kind of exhibition, experience of nature, and landscape architecture. During the next 5 years this popular tourist destination for Berlin residents and visitors will offer recreation, information and relaxation for the whole family.

Since 2020 the exhibition presents a guiding app for people with special needs. The app provides information about the sights and barrier-free service facilities along the route. It offers audio descriptions and transcripts of the visual and audio information conveyed in the exhibition. Additionally, the app includes several videos in German Sign Language that explain the trees importance for the forest’s ecosystem. A short video in German Sign Language also explains how to get to the exhibition and how to proceed from the main entrance at Havelchaussee.

The Luther Effect – Protestantism 500 Years in the World

Background

Commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the national special exhibition was created by gewerkdesign based on the German Historical Museum’s concept. The exhibition not only presents Protestantism’s diversity and the history of its reception and impact, but also its potential for conflict on a global scale by illustrating the global history of the »Luther Effect« with examples from five selected countries. On an area of approx. 3,000 sqm the exhibition assembles outstanding exhibits from national and international lenders, many of which have never before been displayed in Germany. The design concept by gewerkdesign highlights the structural elements of the Martin-Gropius-Bau and playfully integrates into the architecture of its halls, forging an exciting symbiosis with the installation of the German composer and sonic artist Hans Peter Kuhn in the atrium of the Museum.

Oh Yeah! Pop Music in Germany

Background

Following the great success of gewerkdesign’s exhibition »Oh Yeah – Pop Music in Switzerland« at the Museum of Communication in Bern, the exhibition’s content and design were adapted to Germany. Now designed as a travelling exhibition, its first venue is the Focke-Museum in Bremen. The exhibition presents more than 90 years of German pop music in the set design of a radio show: from the 1920s Swing to the Beat era, Punk, Neue Deutsche Welle, Techno and Hip Hop up to the present. Equipped with headphones, the visitors can listen into a rich variety of songs. Many acoustic and film stations offer a journey into their very own musical history. Produced by gewerkdesign and supervised by the same team as in Bern, the travelling exhibition was set up in Bremen between September 2016 and July 2017. Its next venues are Frankfurt a.M. (17.08.17 to 25.02.18), Berlin (15.03. to 16.09.18), Leipzig and Stuttgart.

Sugars and Beyond! Food – Matter – Energy

Background

In 2015 the display collection of the former research and training centre of the sugar industry – Berlin Wedding’s Sugar Museum – was incorporated into the German Museum of Technology’s permanent exhibition. When designing the new exhibition site, gewerkdesign chose to include a few memories and references to the former sugar museum; for example, the specimens of beetles harmful to the sugar beet that have been preserved in fluid or the former sugar institute’s research material on sugar cane.

The second part of the new exhibition is dedicated to sugar compounds used for purposes other than sweetening food; for instance, as building matter, for energy storage or for coding and transmitting information. The room is surrounded by a large wall containing texts, lighting and life-sized illustrations of people who have a very special relationship with sugar.
