Unique in both design and material, this hand-sewn upcycled apron is made from coated lightbox fabric.
Using material from the exhibition “Our State: 75 Years of North Rhine-Westphalia,” this apron was hand-sewn by a seamstress in Berlin. The fabric comes from large-format wall murals in the exhibition space. The motifs are historical black-and-white photographs in a dot grid pattern depicting the state’s history; due to the dotted structure, they resembled large-scale newspaper clippings.
Lightbox fabric is characterized by its ability to evenly diffuse light from behind while remaining opaque, ensuring that motifs on the front remain clearly visible. In its upcycled and tailored form, only fragments of the original motifs remain visible. Thus, the motif becomes an abstract dot pattern.
The apron is partially edged with blue fabric ribbon, which also extends into the lacing. It has a simple pocket for small items. In terms of size, it is suitable for children.
Each hand-sewn piece is one-of-a-kind, so the print will vary slightly from the images.
The sturdy fabric is wipeable and waterproof, but not machine-washable.
