There are many different ideas as to what the afterlife may look like. The exhibition »Goodbye & Hello« presents an impressive collection of bizarre objects.

Background

There are many different ideas as to what the afterlife may look like, but most of these are rather vague. The special exhibition »Goodbye & Hello« does not try to present a definite image. Rather, it presents an impressive collection of photographs and audio material, interviews and bizarre objects that themselves attempt or dare to communicate with the afterlife.

Alluding to optical illusions, the exhibition has a very graphical appearance in order to evoke astonishment and incredulity. The iF International Forum Design in Hannover awarded »Goodbye & Hello: A dialogue with the hereafter« with the »iF Communication Design Award 2009«.

Berlin Wall

Background

Starting point for gewerkdesign’s logotype for the Berlin Wall was a rectangle mirroring the proportions of the wall and corresponding with the words »Berliner Mauer«. Omitting one segment of the rectangle in between the words makes reference to the former division of Berlin into an eastern and western part, yet also the opening of the wall. The missing segment is repeated a little below the rectangle and can be used for including additional information like a place, an event, or a date.

The logotype was selected in an elaborate selection procedure by the Federal Government of Germany. It identifies all institutions subject to public law that are dedicated to the research and information about the Berlin Wall or the history of the German division. It is also used as a certificate for quality approved products and services of non-governmental institutions.

The Berlin Wall logotype was awarded the European Design Award in Stockholm 2008.

Berlin Wall Memorial

Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße 111, Berlin

Background

The logotype by gewerkdesign for the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Straße 111 was first published in 1999.

It consists of the three delicate numerals 1 and the words »Berliner Mauer – Dokumentationszentrum«, alluding to the address of the memorial and the division of the Berlin Wall into three parts: the eastern wall, the death zone, and the western wall. The logotype is very flexible because the space in between the numerals is variable and responds to the width of the print product.

As the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Marienfelde Refugee Centre Memorial were combined by a superordinate institution in 2009 – the Foundation of the Berlin Wall – their respective logotypes were redesigned and made to fit together harmonically.

Berlin Wall Trail

Background

In 2006 gewerkdesign created a signage system for the the Berlin Wall hiking and bike trail, which traces the course of the former GDR border fortifications encircling West Berlin.

During the course of the 160 km long train gewerkdesign’s simple orange signs point out historical sites and, similar to the well known »stolpersteine«, honour the memory of the 46 people, who were kille trying to cross the border.

Science + Fiction – Between Nanoworld and Global Culture

Background

The international travelling exhibition »science + fiction« contemplates the cultural relations between fine arts and science. Within a structure designed exclusively for the exhibition by gewerkdesing works of art and scientific facts are juxtaposed.

Just like a »Wunderkammer« from the Renaissance when the arts and sciences were not as separate as they are today, the exhibition uses artistic works in order to comment upon the essential accomplishments of science represented by images, objects, specimens and media reports.

Working together with scientists and artists gewerkdesign specified an architectural matrix consisting of identical modules for integrating the exhibits.
